International Student Orientation Day

The International and Exchange Student Centre, SDC’s Writing Support Centre, and SDC’s Learning Skills Services are providing an orientation day for Western’s newly arrived undergraduate and graduate international students. Presentations will be given on issues related to achieving academic success, cultural transition, and immigration regulations (e.g. work and study permits). Don’t forget to join us for the campus tour and social event at the end of the day!

Walking Tour of London and Lunch at the Covent Garden Market

Get to know your new city! Join us in a walking tour of the London downtown area. The tour will end at the Covent Garden Market where you will be able to choose from a variety of international foods for lunch. Make sure to bring extra money for lunch at the Covent Garden Market and your bus pass (or money for the bus).

English Conversation Program Registration

This program gives you the opportunity to practice conversational English outside of the formal classroom or work setting, improve English communication skills, gain confidence, increase knowledge of Canadian culture, and meet people from different areas of the university community. International Potluck Picnic in the Park

Come and join us at Gibbons Park for an afternoon of Canadian and International cuisine, fun, and friendship. When attending a potluck, everyone brings a little bit of something (e.g., a special dish from your culture) to share with others. You can either cook a dish or buy something already made. We will be outdoors, so don’t forget to wear sunscreen and bring something cool to drink. Bring your bus pass (or money for the bus). Families and children are invited!

This is an event that you won’t want to miss! The falls are one of Canada’s most famous tourist attractions, and this trip is one of IESC’s most popular events. Spend the day exploring the area with Peer Guides and other international students. You also have the option of riding the Maid of the Mist to get as close to the falls as possible. Spaces are limited, so register early!

It is strawberry season in Ontario! Come and join us to experience strawberry picking at Heeman’s Garden Centre and Strawberry Farm (located just outside of London—www.heeman.ca). Pick Your Own strawberries is a popular summer activity enjoyed by many Canadian families. Please bring money if you plan on picking your own strawberries. Families and children are invited!

This is an opportunity to learn more about astronomy and view the skies through the telescope. Objects viewed vary with the season, but might include the Moon, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, binary stars, star clusters, planetary nebulae, or galaxies. There is nothing like seeing these wonders with your own eyes.

Nature Walk and Ice Cream Sundaes

Join us for a nature walk in the woods on one of London's many walking trails. Many families enjoy afternoon walks around the neighbourhood, parks and walking trails during the summer months. We'll take a walk through the Medway Valley Heritage Forest which provides a scenic landscape in all seasons, as the stream winds between steep banks up to 25 metres in height. The valley has a diversity of ecosystems and many species of plants which normally would be found in more southern regions. We'll start and end our walk from main campus.

Afterwards, we'll head back to IESC to 'build your own ice cream sundae'. We will be outdoors, so don't forget to wear sunscreen and/or mosquito repellent, and bring something cool to drink. We will be walking for 45-60 minutes, so please wear comfortable shoes. Families and children are invited!

International Student Orientation Days (Part 1)

Orientation Day Part 1 will focus on providing you with the information and resources you need to settle in and navigate Western's campus and the city of London.

Topics for the day will include:

  • IESC Programs and Services
  • Settling in & Getting Around (Student Cards, Meal Plan, Cell phones, banking, shopping, London Transit, weather in Canada)
  • Navigating Campus (Campus Roadmap, Student Life, Environment, Health Care, Campus Safety)
  • Key Campus Services and Important Immigration Information.

There will also be an optional session at the end of the day (3:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.) for those who will be living Off-Campus. Staff from Western's Off-Campus Housing Service will provide information about your rights and responsibilities as a renter as well as City of London bylaws and tips for living with roommates.

Light refreshments will be served.

Gathering at Gibbons Park

Date: Sunday, September 8, 2013 (Weather Permitting - Rain date: Sunday, September 15, 2013)
Time: Meet in front of Talbot College at 2:00 p.m.

Location: Gibbons Park

Come and join us for a day at one of London's scenic parks. There is a reason why London is called the "Forest City", so come and find out why! Play soccer, volleyball, frisbee, take a walk in the park, ride your bike, roller blade, or just talk and relax by the Thames River.

Don't forget to wear your sunscreen and bring something cool to drink.

We will be walking to the park, so make sure to bring comfortable shoes!

TALK: Talking About Life in Canada

Dates: Tuesday, September 17 (September 17- October 22, every Tuesday), 2013

Presented by: The International and Exchange Student Centre (IESC) and The Student Development Centre (SDC)

Being an international student can be an exciting and life-changing experience. There are many new things to discover as you adjust to your new surroundings. If you are interested in discussing and sharing experiences about living and studying in a new culture, then this weekly group may be for you.

Weekly Discussion Topics Include:

  • adapting to a new culture
  • making new friends
  • communicating across cultures
  • managing change and stress
  • finding resources to achieve your academic goals
  • maintaining health and well-being while away from home

No registration required. Hot drinks and snacks will be provided. Feel free to bring your lunch.

This is an event that you won't want to miss! The falls are one of Canada's most famous tourist attractions, and this trip is one of IESC's most popular events. Spend the day exploring the area with Peer Guides and other international students, and you also have the option of riding the Maid of the Mist to get as close to the falls as possible. Spaces are limited, so register early!

International Student Welcome Day and London Lightning Basketball Game

A special invitation to Western's International Student community! The City of London, London Economic Development Corporation, and 8 local educational institutions including Western have partnered to host a very special welcome event for international students studying in the city. Come celebrate with us and watch our home team and two-time National Basketball League of Canada Champions - London Lightning, as they take on the Ottawa SkyHawks! This event will include an official welcome to the city from the London Lightning Head Coach and players as well as local, provincial, and federal dignitaries. You will enjoy a complimentary lunch (pizza or hot dog + pop) and meet international students from different institutions. Basketball fans will be able to get autographs from their favourite players after the game!

If you haven't visited the Budweiser Gardens, here is a chance to do so! Budweiser Gardens is the largest sports and entertainment centre in southwestern Ontario with a seating capacity of over 9,000 for sports events. It is the home arena for two professional sports teams - the London Knights (Hockey) and the London Lightning (Basketball), and also hosts many international sporting events and world-renowned performers.

Anishnawbe Medicine Wheel Workshop

The Medicine Wheel is an Aboriginal teaching originating from the Anishnawbe (Ojibway, Pottawatami and Odawa) and Cree peoples of Canada and the United States used to help find balance and live harmoniously in relation to oneself, others, the land, and all of creation. The Medicine Wheel draws on natural laws embedded in the teachings of the circle and its cyclical nature. This workshop presentation will include a sharing circle as well as the introduction of the four sacred medicines.

Snow Tubing

Enjoy our Canadian winter by taking part in a traditional Canadian activity: dressing warmly and sliding down snow-covered hills! This activity is similar to tobogganing (or sledding), but instead of using a sled, you use a big inflated tire tube. It will be a great experience and lots of fun! We will be going to a snow-tubing hill near London called River Valley.

The Post-Graduation Work Permit Workshop will outline the eligibility criteria and the process to create and submit an application for a Post-Graduation Work Permit. The workshop will cover the components of online applications, including the Come to Canada Wizard questionnaire, the creation of a MyCIC account, and the initiation of an online application. Participants who would like to start the online process will need to know their Client ID number and the expiry date from their Study Permit.

Luckily, many opportunities exist both on and off campus to help you connect with new people, have fun, and gain valuable work and life experience. At this session, you will learn about workplace culture and the value of volunteering in Canada. You will also hear about interesting things to do and see in the city and will learn more about off-campus networking opportunities. If you are planning to attend the annual Student2Business Conference (www.s2b.ca) on March 5th- we strongly encourage you to attend this session for information about the "unwritten rules" of networking, and practical tips on starting and joining conversations!

Income Tax Clinic for International Students

Date: Monday, March 10 - Friday March 28, 2014
Time: 10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. ((Note: please arrive before 3:00 p.m. if you would like to be assisted)

Every year, the International and Exchange Student Centre offers a FREE Income Tax Clinic for International Students and their spouses/common-law partners at Western University. Students will be helped by our trained volunteers on a first-come, first-serve basis. Each tax return will take approximately 1 hour to file. Please visit the IESC website for details regarding what documents you should bring with you to the clinic.

The Income Tax Clinic for International Students is staffed by volunteers trained by the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA). Volunteers will be available to help you get started (e.g., determining residency status, what forms to use), answer any questions you may have, and teach you the process of how to complete a Canadian income tax return. Please note that volunteers will not be filling or completing the forms for you, you will be doing this yourselves.
